Coming Soon - Here and Queer: Liverpool

Here and Queer: Liverpool is a project celebrating our city’s LGBTQ+ culture with the aim to educate and shed light on the lives and stories of queer Scousers. In the current media climate, we feel it is of great importance that more LGBTQ+ history is documented, preserved and passed on to younger generations in order for us to have a better understanding of a history that is all too often ignored within mainstream teaching.

The project itself is a collection of oral history interviews conducted with LGBTQ+ identifying people from across Merseyside. With a diverse range of people from different backgrounds and of different identities of all ages, this an archive with which to platform the experiences, narratives and the changes that these people have seen within the Queer community over the past few decades.

Each story is illustrated within a comic format for a Here and Queer: Liverpool book, wherein excerpts from each transcribed interview have been collected together and illustrated to help tell queer, Scouse stories.

In part, this is to highlight the shared, lived experiences many people in the LGBTQIA+ community have had and are continuing to have as a marginalised community. From coming to terms with who we are and coming out to the homophobia and transphobia that sadly all too many of us have experienced.

Here and Queer: Liverpool is a resource of reflection, celebration, and resilience – from the exuberance of experiencing our first pride to the sense of community we have within our queer community and building a chosen family within it, these stories provide an essential map of queer experience in a vibrant, authentic voice that has long gone unheard.
