Sustainability
To make comic and illustrated books, we need paper. To make paper, we need trees. Trees and forests cover almost a third of the world’s surfaces, but we are losing them at a rapid rate.
Sustainable Paper sourcing
Marginal CIO recognise the importance of forests and the ecosystem services which they provide such as clean water and air, raw materials, and biodiversity. As deforestation is the second largest source of C02 emissions, we recognise that combating deforestation through responsible paper sourcing policies is essential for Marginal CIO. Our goal is to source 100% of our paper from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified sources.
Our Sustainability pledges
We will source 100% of our paper sustainably and will adhere to Forest Stewardship Council (FSCTM) certified. FSCTM is the hallmark standard of excellence in sustainable paper sourcing and helps protects forests, their local communities and wildlife. Wood is by nature a renewable resource. When forests are properly managed, harvesting timber can be an effective way of safeguarding forests for future generations. This is of vital importance given the fact that forests support up to 1.6 billion of some of the world’s poorest people, as well as countless plant and animal species. FSCTM is the only wood certification schemed endorsed by WWF, Greenpeace and the Woodland Trust. Certified forests must meet a range of best-in-class standards, ensuring harvested trees are replanted or allowed to regenerate naturally. FSCTM also safeguards forest biodiversity and local communities.
We will measure and reduce our carbon footprint from printer to bookshop. We recognise that we have a responsibility to work with our partners and suppliers to reduce our environmental impact, thinking about our entire supply chain including printers and distribution network.
We will only work with supplier who have signed up to PRELIMS industry-wide environment and labour standards. PRELIMS is a publishing industry code which sets out the minimum labour and environmental standards we require, covering fair pay and working conditions, health and safety, and energy and water management.
We are focusing our efforts on reducing single-used plastic and printing within our office.
Supplier and Printer Standards
We strive to procure paper from suppliers who source responsibly and are certified to an internationally recognised Chain of Custody Standard such as SFI, PEFC, or FSC. Suppliers must also comply with local government regulations. We required all our print suppliers to be environmentally conscious and also avoid controversial fibres. When selecting vendors, Marginal insists that each prospective partner provide its corporate environmental policy or documentation, demonstrating its environmental practices and goals. We require all our printers to follow ISO 14001 management systems.
